“I’ve seen astonishing changes in the role of women in my career. The strength and talent of women in the industry is unprecedented. But there are still hills to climb, and WIFT-T’s help is needed as much as ever.”

Chair's Message

The Foundation for WIFT-T is dedicated to raising funds to support the empowerment of women in the screen-based industry.

In 2015, we faced many challenges as the uncertain economy continued to impact our overall donation levels. One thing, however, remains certain, each of us as individuals can make a difference and this is the message we bring to you today. As a donor you play a vital role in ensuring women have access to all the professional development tools they need to succeed — a strong and supportive network, key business and leadership skills and opportunities for personal and professional growth and promotion. Together we can empower young women to be leaders of tomorrow.

Donate to The Foundation

If you have ever considered donating (or donating again) to our Foundation for Women in Film & Television - Toronto, now is the time. Women need our support and we need yours.

Raising funds to subsidize WIFT-T’s highly successful professional development programs and awarding bursaries to women otherwise unable to attend, the Foundation and WIFT-T improve women's lives. Our members tell us so time and time again, sharing stories of connection, learning, and advancement.

Our ability to empower women is dependant, however, on adequate funding and in 2015 our resources were diminished, sadly resulting in half the number of bursaries offered in the previous year.

Unfortunately, corporate and government funding continued to dwindle due in large part to an uncertain economy. WIFT-T and the Foundation were both impacted, as were many individual women no longer able to count on in-house training or corporate support for their professional development. Simultaneously, the industry has realized growth for women in screen-based media sectors has stalled in many ways.
Let's turn this situation around. Donate to impact change.

quality programming, beneficial bursaries

Impacting Change

The Foundation for WIFT-T subsidized 235 hours of high-quality programming in 2015, with 385 active participants. We also empowered four well-deserving women by providing bursaries to attend the Digital Media Bootcamp or Shaw Media Management Accelerator program. These young women gained business and leadership skills, access to industry and academic leaders, and career advancement opportunities.

Bursaries are awarded to women who are underrepresented in the industry and/or who have limited financial means or limited access to training. These bursaries are only made possible through individual donations and corporate support.
“I wanted to give back to an organization that has helped me get where I am. The mentorship award helped me to re-invent myself as a TV series director and led to my success.”

~Donor Dawn Wilkinson, writer, director & producer, Heartland, Degrassi, Murdoch Mysteries, Republic of Doyle

Zohrain Zafar
“My attendance [at Digital Media Bootcamp 2015] would not have been possible without the generous bursary I was awarded. My sincere thanks to WIFT-T for this invaluable opportunity; it will definitely help to propel my career in the right direction!”
~Zohrain Zafar, Producer, Bell Local

A heartfelt thank you goes to the donors who made bursaries, such as the one awarded to Zohrain Zafar, possible in 2015. Your donation directly impacted the lives and careers of several bright, driven women who show exceptional potential in the screen-based media industry.

As we move into 2016, please help create more bursaries to enable women such as Zohrain to advance their careers in screen-based media.

Access to high-quality educational programming, such as the Digital Media Bootcamp (DMB) that Zohrain attended, can radically alter the career projection of women who would be unable to attend without support. Bursaries can make a very concrete and substantial difference in the lives of these women.

A previous WIFT-T volunteer, Zohrain learned critical information about the digital technical environments now available to tell stories and distribute work – plus practical business skills such as how to effectively manage project deadlines and budgets.

“Attending Digital Media Bootcamp I feel more equipped than ever to start out in the independent digital media landscape. ... I gained a general knowledge of the different types of narrative structures in the interactive world, the right terms to use, what funding sources were available, what different platforms can offer, and how to lead a team effectively.”

In an often uncertain world, this is a concrete and achievable goal. Let's make it happen.
“We are entering an era that is really exciting. We still have to constantly make that better and be aware of the generation that is coming up, that we are helping them and make them feel supported.”

Amy Jo Johnson & Trina McQueen
“Filmmaking is a highly collaborative and creative business that relies on making key connections. As women we need more opportunities to create those relationships – WIFT-T helps us to do that...”
~Donor Amy Jo Johnson, actor & filmmaker, The Space Between, Flashpoint

Amy Jo Johnson and Trina McQueen were our Give the Gift of WIFT-T 2015 Ambassadors. They are also donors. Every dollar counts and is used to provide women access to the skills, knowledge, and networks they need to succeed.

“I am honoured to work with [WIFT-T]. ... It is the job of everyone ... to enable, support, or be artists.”

~Donor Trina McQueen, O.C., Adjunct Professor, MBA Program in Arts & Media Administration, Schulich School of Business, York University & former CTV President

Amy Jo Johnson has been an active member of WIFT-T for several years, including screening films she wrote, produced and directed at the WIFT-T Showcase – Bent, Lines, and Shooting Blanks. “Being part of a community that supports women in the arts has been an incredibly nurturing and inspiring aspect to my filmmaking journey.”

A generous ongoing donor, Trina McQueen is an inspiration. A pioneer in forging a path for women in broadcasting, she began as the first female host of CTV's W5 and went on to hold numerous positions of influence, including executive producer for CBC's The National and president and COO of CTV Inc. Currently an adjunct professor at the prestigious Schulich School of Business, she continues to guide the leaders of tomorrow.

Please consider following Trina McQueen and Amy Jo Johnson's example and become a donor, enabling more women to forge forward in screen-based sectors.
